Life is good. Until one day it isn’t.
We all know that we are all only a single heartbeat away from the next crisis. The issue is often not when it will arrive, but rather how will we deal with it once it does.
And once it does, how will YOU deal with the adversity? Think about your last misfortune, how did you approach it? Are you ready for the next one?
Four Personality Responses to Adversity
The Warrior – The Warrior approaches the struggle head on with a battle mindset. How do we beat this adversary? What do we need to do to see ourselves celebrating in the victory at the conclusion of the struggle?
The Winner – Sees the adversity as a chance to reset the table. He identifies the areas that may change and identifies the opportunities within the new conditions. He approaches the circumstances with a positive expectancy.
The Whiner – Complains about the adversity without ever doing anything to fight against it. Whiners learn to perfect their whine through life’s adversities. They choose to address challenges with complaints, instead of finding a path forward. They use complaints as a tool to keep themselves in a victim status.
The Wimp – The wimp decides when the day of decision comes to face the difficulty, he wimps out to avoid facing it. They completely ignore any sense of responsibility to the outcome of the situation or dealing with the details of getting through it. They deny responsibility and look for someone to blame.
Resolve To Be Stronger When Adversity Strikes
Now that you understand the responses, how you can stand up to adversity? What steps will you take to become better prepared to deal with it? Where do you go for the strength to become something greater than what you are now?
If you are a whiner or a wimp, how can you resolve to improve your courage and face your adversity with the mind of a winner or a warrior?
Some ideas:
1) Embrace your faith – realize that you need faith to deal with adversity. The belief that you will overcome is important to achieve the most successful outcome.
2) Surround yourself with winners and warriors so you can learn the habits, skills and mindsets from those that go through life focused on the positive.
3) Read and learn from the greatest leaders of all time. The lessons in overcoming adversity are sprinkled throughout the bible, ancient history and up through and including our modern day.
4) Be prepared. Being prepared means you have taken steps to improve the outcome when adversity strikes.
Adversity is like a tornado. We know it will come. We hope it doesn’t come to us. And the only thing we can do is to prepare in case it does come to us. And then, we manage our mindset in the midst of it to achieve the most positive outcome.
